While none of us Democrats particularly like Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, she comes across as a liberal hero when compared to Sen. John Cornyn. Hutchison chose common sense over politics when she voted for stem cell research. Stem cell research has widespread, bi-partisan support because it has the potential to save the lives of our loved ones. Even right-wing conservatives like Sen. Orrin Hatch and Sen. Bill Frist have decided to vote for stem cell research.
But sadly, our junior Senator from Texas has sold out to the radical religious right, and Cornyn voted against stem cell research. When you're to the right of Orrin Hatch, then you've really gone off the deep end.
On this issue and many others, Cornyn proven that he stands with religious extremists, not mainstream Texans. Cornyn apparently has decided that "saving" embryonic stem cells, that would have been discarded anyway, are somehow more important than saving the lives of your living, breathing loved ones. George Bush, also a card-carrying member of the radical-relgious right, agreed with Cornyn and issued the only veto of his presidency to ban potentially life-saving stem cell research.
If you're tired of Cornyn giving Texas a bad name, then step up to the plate and donate to the effort organized to defeat him in 2008. If Texas Democrats run a strong senatorial campaign in 2008, that will help Obama pull off the impossible...winning the general election in 2008. With several major urban areas trending blue, Texas will again become a competitive state sooner than later. Maybe we can speed up that timetable with an inspiring Obama presidential campaign and an organized Texas senatorial campaign against the radical right-wing John Cornyn.
